The concept of a social networking site 10 years ago was more or less unheard of. They have seen absolutely explosive growth since then, turning from hobbies into multi-billion dollar companies. Individuals will post the most intimate information about their lives on their profiles, which can often come back to bite them. There have even been arrests for criminal activities, when an individual posted proof of the crime on a social networking site. It may not seem likely, but it is also quite possible to get into trouble with an immigration filing when it comes to social networking sites. You want to make sure that, at all times, you are accurately portraying the reason you are in the United States. Many times, the trouble people run into is merely related to intent. For example, if you have obtained a tourist visa and are planning a trip to the U.S., posting things saying that you are planning on marrying your fiancée in the U.S. or planning on working for a short bit while you are here can, and likely will, get you into trouble. Also, if you are coming to the U.S. on a student visa, your only task should be studying and other school-related activities. You should not post any information indicating that you are either working, travelling as an artist, or planning on marrying your significant other.
