According to information posted on the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website, the ability to Self Check, which is a free online service of E-Verify allowing workers to check their own employment eligibility status, has been expanded, and is currently available in all 50 states, as well as Guam, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands.

This announcement marks a milestone for the service, which was launched by Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas roughly a year ago in March 2011, in that the original goal of expanding the service nationally within one year from launch has been met.

During a press conference, Alejandro Mayorkas said “we are pleased to complete, ahead of schedule, our expansion of this important tool for employees. Since our initial launch in March, approximately 67,000 people have used Self Check and we anticipate that participation will dramatically increase with service now available to individuals across the country.”

The service was created as part of a partnership between the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security to provide individual people with the tools necessary to check their own employment eligibility, as well as guiding those individuals on how to fix any potential errors in their SSA and DHS records. It was the very first online E-Verify service that was offered directly to workers and is available in both English and Spanish.

It has been extremely popular, with thousands of individuals using the service in the year since it was created. It was not initially a bi-lingual service, but that feature was added in August 2011, to further expand the user base that it would apply to.
